We are excited to share information regarding commencement after meeting with our seniors on May 5th!
We are striving to make commencement as special and memorable as possible for not only our seniors but also for Saber families. Commencement for the Class of 2020 will take place on Sunday, May 17th at 3 p.m. for graduates and their immediate family only. Our priority is still the health and safety of those involved. Our celebration plan has been approved by Clinton County Health Department and Clinton County Emergency Management.
Commencement will be held in the large student parking lot south of the high school. We made arrangements for an outdoor concert stage with video screens, speakers, and FM transmission capabilities that will be on the east side of the lot, facing west, to provide the best sight lines. Families will be able to listen to the ceremony via their car stereos. The ceremony will also be streamed live on YouTube for those unable to attend.
All vehicles will enter on 11th Street where they will be checked in by local law enforcement. Please remember this event is not open to the public. Those that will be allowed to enter the parking area are graduating seniors and their immediate family in one vehicle. If a student has two households, two cars are allowed. Prior to the ceremony, families will be assigned a numbered parking spot. This ensures vehicles will be spread out across the entire parking lot to allow for safe social distancing. We ask that those attending not get out of their vehicles, except to allow the graduating senior to walk across the stage during their turn. There will not be access to any school buildings or facilities during the ceremony.
When it comes time for students to receive their diplomas, staff members will guide each student’s vehicle toward the stage to allow the family optimal viewing. Graduates will exit their vehicle and go to the staging area. They will receive a gift bag with their diploma, awards, and other items, then walk across the stage as their name is read and their tassel is turned.
A professional photographer has been hired to take pictures of the event as well as a picture of each graduate. These will be shared with parents after the ceremony. After their picture is taken, the graduate will return to their vehicle which will then go back to the assigned parking space.
There will not be a guest speaker, however, the senior class president and student council president will each give a brief speech. Before the ceremony as vehicles arrive we will be sharing the Senior Slideshow and a special commencement video on the large screens. We encourage the seniors to decorate their graduation caps while still following school guidelines.
Throughout the entire event the following safety precautions will be in place to protect everyone involved:
After the ceremony all vehicles will be escorted by the DeWitt, Grand Mound, Low Moor, and Welton Fire Departments through DeWitt where community members can share in the celebration from their front porches. We will share the parade route as we get closer to the event. We encourage you to decorate your vehicles to celebrate this occasion!
We will continue to stay in touch and share more details as they become available. Thank you for your cooperation and patience! We look forward to celebrating our graduates together in a ceremony that’ll be even bigger and better than our regular commencement!
